I was wondering if there will be a list of events released, and when.  It's my first time coming to origins, but I've been to gen con several times.  Gen con is getting too expensive.  So what are the events like at origins?  I've heard alot about "tracks" but can't get a clear message.  Any help out there?

they're pretty much similar events.   depending on how long you've gone to gencon, it's very similar but on a smaller scale.  It reminds me (in size/scale) of gencon circa 1994-1996.   compared to gencon in the past few years, it's about half the size in regards to the number of events and attendees.  while that seems like a big reduction, it's still thousands of events and over 10,000 attendees.  gencon was getting too crowded and impersonal for me after attending for 12 years so i decided to try origins last year and definitely prefer it.  there seems to be a bigger focus on minis and tabletop/board games comparatively  while collectible games are taken down a notch; i'd say RPGs are at about the same level of attendance percentage wise.  the dealers room is about 3/5 the size of gencon so there's plenty of chances to shop but some of the big names don't attend (wotc and GW)    i'm not sure if any of the site coordinators have the last years event list (i'd like to download it too since i'm trying to convince a friend to go in 2008) but a link would be appreciated.  as for the tracks, i think you can buy a badge for a reduced price that allows you to only play that "track" of games (i.e. historical minis) but other than that i didn't see any importance to it.

Thanks for the info.  I went to Gen Con my first time in 1998 up in Milwakuee.  The hotels sucked, but at least you could walk around without being beat to death by backpacks and unwashed bodies.  I'm interested in a smaller more casual convention.  This one seems to fit the bill.  It also doesn't hurt about the Hall pass program.  Are there any RPGA games at Origins?

If you're interested in D&D, RPGA/Living Greyhawk, yeah there seems to be alot of that.  Its tougher to find a non-LG D&D event than otherwise.  Board games and mini's are also very well represented at Origins.  Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) GM's many of the BG's, and they generally know what they're doing.

Tracks are themed programs that games  and seminars can be grouped under.   This years tracks ar Brains... (Zombies) Final Frontier (space)... Heroes... GAMMA Retailers Summit... Kids Programming...  Newcommers... Spouse and Family.... Stragicorps...  Teachers HAll PAss....  Women in games or gaming.

Some of these will have ribbons you can purchase that act as genericss and let you get in all the events in that track  (as long as a seat is available) by just showing your ribbon.  But you can also by ribbons for themes that aren't tracks... like a HOT (Historical Origins Team) that gets you into all the Historical Minis games... or a Puffing Billy ribbon that gets you into the puffing billy games...

Hi there!

The roster of events for Origins generally gets released in the spring. The first deadline for event submission is the end of January, so we're still getting events in from our GMs.

If you'd like to look at the pre-reg booklet from 2007, you can find  it here as a PDF.

I just saw that Gencon already has a draft schedule of events out (about 2200 events, so it's far from complete).

Has Origins ever considered putting out an early event draft, just to let people get an idea of what's coming up and make some tentative plans?

Hi there!

We do that, in the form of the pre-reg book.

We try to balance getting the information in from our GMs and companies, and getting it out to our fans. It's a balancing act, as the fans want the information as soon as possible, and the companies and GMs are still getting their plans together as late as April and May.

We keep it as balanced as we can, and try to make the majority of folks happy.
