Hi, I'm quite confused about the newcomers program. I don't have any idea from the description what makes it a good plan for newbies. What is the advantage of this? Do we need to register for it? What happens if we show up at the special times designated in the booklet? Could someone describe it more throughly? Also, it might be helpful to list it on the website with the tracks or something.

Hi there -

The Newcomers track is great for newbies because it's staffed with people who will answer all of your questions about games, gaming, and gaming conventions (both in general and Origins-specific).

Every year at Origins we have new folks who've never been to a gaming convention before, and Origins is really big - it can be an overwhelming experience. So we have a room that's dedicated to helping out those folks, and providing answers to questions that people might feel silly asking.

If you want to try out new genres of games, its a great place to do so. If you've never tried a CCG, but don't want to commit to a demo because you feel silly not knowing anything about the genre, the Newcomers room can help. We don't guarantee to teach every game, of course -that would be impossible. But we'll teach you the basics of how a CCG (or RPG, or LARP, or Minis game) works, so that you feel better prepared to join in on the scheduled events at Origins.

You don't need to regsiter for it - just show up, and bring any questions or confusions you might have.

A page has been added to the website.

Thanks, that helps clarify quite a bit!

It seems in general that many of the descriptions and things assume a certain familiarity with Origins and various gaming systems. A more extensive glossary or other guide for newbies might be something to consider next year, perhaps from some enterprising volunteer. :)

Have you tried the Unofficial Origins Survival Guide?

In general, though, its hard for us to write for people who are entirely new, as we know so much about the show ourselves. But keep pointing those things out to us - it helps!

That link - http://origins.guide.home.att.net/Origins2k6/ - has been referenced often here in the forums but is no longer working.

My educated guess is that, with Origins drawing nearer, the owner may have been deluged with visits and perhaps exceeded the allocated bandwidth authorized.

Tip - If you google for that link, you can click on the "cached" link and still access some of the info that google has cached.
